In this ABM Skills Sharing Session, we explored how mentors can best support neurodiverse clients with curiosity, empathy, and adaptability. Led by ABM Fellow Barbra Carlisle, the session aligned with ABM Core Competency 2.1: Awareness of Self, Mentee and Environment, with a focus on Element 2.1.1 – Creating a safe environment to establish trust, respecting cultural nuances and neurodiversity, and tailoring support to the unique challenges of each mentee.
During the session, we explored:
– The importance of curiosity, understanding, and empathy – and the risks of making assumptions
– Practical ways to tailor the mentoring environment and approach to meet the needs and preferences of neurodiverse mentees
– How to remain flexible and adaptive in our tools, techniques, and communication
– Insights and experiences shared by ABM members on supporting neurodiverse individuals
This was a welcoming and open session, designed for all mentors – no prior experience or expertise in neurodiversity was required. We created a safe space for discussion, reflection, and shared learning around this important aspect of inclusive mentoring.
