Self-awareness is a familiar concept in leadership and development, but what happens when awareness does not lead to meaningful change?
In this Skills Sharing Session, ABM Fellow Barbra Carlisle explores what sits beneath surface-level self-awareness. The discussion focuses on situations where mentees acknowledge their behaviours yet fail to take action, and where mentors themselves may recognise patterns without fully shifting their own practice.
Aligned with ABM Core Competency 2.1: Awareness of Self, Mentee and Environments, this session challenges the assumption that awareness alone is enough, and examines how mentors can support deeper insight and real movement.
In this session, we explore:
• When self-awareness becomes a blocker rather than a catalyst for change
• How to recognise when a mentee is not “moving the dial”
• The mentor’s own blind spots and areas for growth
• Practical ways to support insight that leads to action
