In this ABM Skills Sharing Session, we explored how mentors can care for their own wellbeing so they can consistently bring presence, clarity, and compassion to their work. Led by ABM Fellow Brenda Etchells, the session aligned with ABM Core Competency 2.1: Awareness of Self, Mentee and Environment, with a focus on sustaining the mentor’s energy and balance throughout the mentoring journey.
During the session, we explored:
✅ The importance of setting a healthy cadence and pace in mentoring relationships
✅ Practical strategies for maintaining and renewing personal energy levels
✅ Mindsets and boundaries that keep mentoring constructive and sustainable
✅ Simple techniques for mental offloading and reset between sessions
✅ Tips and experiences shared by ABM members to build a collective wellbeing toolkit
This was a reflective and supportive space, designed for all mentors – no prior expertise in wellbeing practices was required. Together, we paused, shared, and learned how to look after ourselves in order to better support those we mentor.
