Skills Sharing Session – Thinking Clearly: Metathinking and the ACT Hexaflex

Self-awareness is often positioned as the foundation of effective mentoring. But what happens in the moment when awareness slips under pressure, and the mentor becomes part of the complexity rather than the catalyst for clarity?

In this month’s ABM Skills Sharing Session, ABM member Kate Davis explores what is happening internally for the mentor when conversations become emotional, circular, or stuck. Together, we examine the subtle shifts that can occur in live sessions – from open curiosity to fixing, rescuing, or steering – and how to recognise these patterns before they dilute impact.

Aligned with ABM Core Competencies 2.1 Awareness of Self, Mentee and Environments, 2.3 Curious Questioning Enabling Insight, and 2.4 Heightened Listening Enabling Learning, this session challenges the assumption that experience alone protects us from drift, and introduces practical ways to stay grounded and intentional in real time.

In this session, we explore:
• What happens inside the mentor when a session becomes complex or emotionally charged
• How to notice the pull to rescue, advise, or prove value
• Why circular conversations often trigger over-functioning
• Practical in-the-moment tools to reset and respond with clarity

You will be introduced to two accessible models: metathinking – the practice of noticing your own thinking as you mentor – and the ACT Hexaflex, a framework for strengthening psychological flexibility so you can stay present and choose your response under pressure.
