The Kübler-Ross Change Curve

The Kübler-Ross Change Curve

The Kübler-Ross Change Curve helps mentors and clients understand the emotional responses people may experience during significant change.

Originally developed by Dr Elisabeth Kübler-Ross to describe the stages of grief, the model has since been adapted to explore reactions to organisational and workplace change. It highlights that people may need emotional support before they can engage logically with a new situation.

When should I use it with a mentoring client?

The Change Curve can be helpful when a client is:

  • Leading a significant organisational change that is affecting employees or teams.
  • Experiencing resistance or low morale during a transition.
  • Trying to understand emotional reactions such as denial, frustration or uncertainty.
  • Supporting people through change and deciding what type of support is needed at each stage.
