Skills Sharing Session: The Challenges of Mentoring Organisational Growth

Hosted by Les Gill, ABM Fellow, this ABM Skills Sharing Session explores one of the most significant leadership transitions faced by senior executives: moving from managing people to leading through coaching and mentoring.

Designed for mentors and leadership professionals, this session will help you better support senior leaders as they shift from directing day-to-day activity to creating a culture that enables growth, development, and greater organisational capability.

Many executives reach a point where traditional management approaches are no longer enough. The skills that helped them succeed as managers can become barriers to empowering others. To create sustainable growth, leaders need to develop a mentoring mindset that encourages ownership, capability, and confidence across their teams.

Drawing on his ADVance model, Les Gill will share practical insights and tools to help mentors support this transition, enabling leaders to turn the triangle from manager to leader to mentor.

In this session, we cover:
• The challenges senior executives face when transitioning from manager to leader and mentor
• Why stepping away from day-to-day management is essential for organisational growth
• The ADVance model and how it supports leadership development
• How coaching and mentoring approaches can build stronger, more self-sufficient teams
• Practical ways mentors can help leaders develop a mentoring culture within their organisations

What you’ll take away:
• A deeper understanding of the transition from manager to leader to mentor
• Practical tools and frameworks from the ADVance model to support leadership development
• Greater confidence in helping senior executives adopt coaching and mentoring approaches
• Strategies to support the growth of capable, empowered, and self-sufficient teams

This session aligns with ABM Core Competency 3.3: Support the development of mentees by adding in the right theory and tools where appropriate, enabling them to become increasingly self-sufficient.
