The ADKAR Change Model helps mentors understand how individuals progress through change and identify where additional support may be needed.
Developed by Jeff Hiatt at Prosci, ADKAR represents five stages: Awareness, Desire, Knowledge, Ability and Reinforcement. The model helps distinguish between understanding the need for change and being ready and able to implement it.
When should I use it with a mentoring client?
ADKAR can be helpful when a client is:
- Introducing change within a team or organisation and needs to understand individual responses.
- Experiencing resistance despite people understanding why the change is necessary.
- Identifying skills or knowledge gaps that are preventing successful implementation.
- Trying to reinforce new behaviours and ensure that improvements are sustained.
